never give up
Steve always wanted to be a Quidditch player. When he first came to Hogwarts, he was still learning so much about the Wizarding world and immediately fell in love with the game. If he wasn't laughed at enough already because of his small size, when the second year boy walked onto the Quidditch field from tryouts, he certainly was laughed at then. But that didn't stop him. Steve gave it all he had, wanting more than anything to get on the team. Major bruises aside, he thought he did well, but he was probably the only one surprised when the list went up and his name wasn't there.
At first, he was really upset. He wanted on the team so bad, and was let down. But after a short time of doubts, and a talk with Professor Erskine, he decided not to give up. So maybe he didn't get on the team this year, he'd for sure get on it next time!
Summer between second and third year was spent training. Fortunate to live in a remote area with Professor Erskine, he was able to get on his broom often. His new friend Bucky joined him in playing when he came to visit, and when tryouts came up in his third year, he knew he'd get in.
Only he didn't. His small size made his dream of being a Chaser practically impossible, and Seeker wasn't open. But he made sure not to let the rejection hurt him. He remained strong, swore to keep training, and swore he'd make it the next time.
Fourth year? It ended the same. Rejection once again. He almost gave up that time, but he remembered what Erskine had told him after that first rejection, and he vowed never to give up.
As fifth year approached, and once again the Chaser spot was open, the new Quidditch Captain considered approaching Steve at the beginning of term and trying to talk him out of trying out. He may not have been the Captain the other years, but he had seen Steve play. He knew he the small male wasn't capable. But when the school term began, the new Steve Rogers arrived at Hogwarts.
It had been an accident. One of Erskine's potions experiments gone wrong. Steve was supposed to take his medicine, but in a rushed frenzy, he drank the wrong potion, and the results...
The Steve Rogers that walked out to that Quidditch pitch for tryouts was the same kid with the same confidence he had every other time he had walked this same path. Only this time, Steve was taller, stronger, and not sickly. His training had paid off, now that his body was able to handle it. His moves were quick, his strength able to allow the passes and blocks he needed to pull.
That year, when Steve checked the list and found his name on it, that he had finally made it on the team, no one was surprised.
